Municipality of AveiroAveiro has an area of 197km2 and 75,000 inhabitants and is located in the Atlantic coast, 50 km south of Porto. The city has its origins from the receding sea waters that still penetrate the city with numerous canals - the Ria. Aveiro is surrounded with lagoons and salt marches which are nowadays part of its landscape, heritage and identity, representing one third of the total area of the municipality.
The municipality of Aveiro has competence and responsibility for town planning, traffic and mobility management, running public primary schools and to build and maintain the network of municipal roads and the sewage system. It also owns and operates a bus company which includes the transport of children to school. It also runs three markets, one exhibition centre as well as a municipal theatre and several museums. On top of this, it is also a key player in the city environment, sports, culture, public health and social services.
