Children and families

The importance to leaf a positive emotional attachment to cycling in early years is one of the key factors to success for LIFE CYCLE. The actions already begin in kindergarten and continue in primary school as well as secondary school. But at all stages it is of grave importance to include parents in the actions.

The kindergarten programme
Kindergarten is the first opportunity to promote cycling to children outside of the framework of their family. And it is the time when children actually learn to cycle! Both conditions are very good fro action in co-operation with kindergartens!
The kindergarten programme integrates cycling into the daily routine of kindergartens. The bicycle is the topic for story telling, painting competitions and games. Moreover, learning to cycle will be emotionalised by creating an event around it including a fun-test for the children. Kindergartens provide save practise spaces and equipment and make a certification for this event. Additionally, the daily trip to the kindergarten is designed to enable cycling for the children using well proven measures such as cycling busses.

The bicycle training for pupils
The age of children when they are allowed to cycle by themselves in traffic is another important point in life when cycling is in the centre of attention. In some locations - as in Graz - this is used to introduce pupils of primary school to cycling in traffic by bicycle training. The special note of it is that the training begins in the class room and ends in real traffic situation training sessions. The most important effects are that it raises competences regarding their mobility to children and enlarges their freedom to move. The LIFE CYCLE partners will copy the approach from Graz to implement and adapt it in their specific conditions and Graz itself will further develop the cycling training to become a long-time programme expanded to secondary school.

The incentive programme for pupils
Youth of the age of 15 - 16 years are a special group for promoting cycling. In this age, most of them are able to gain a driving licence for mopeds and scooters. They need special attention and incentives to stay cycling instead of getting motorised. The programme is based on a cycling to school competition in secondary schools but includes additional benefits such as prices to win and discounts to sport or event facilities. The incentive programme is combined with workshops by general practitioners, nutritionists and bicycle experts. The action will also include road safety tips.
