Move Smart from the start

Move Smart from the start BAMBINI aims to make parents recognize the importance of an early travel socialisation. One innovative approach is to design creative and inspiring toys and books about sustainable transport modes for children aged 0 to 6.
Move smart from the start is the slogan of the European project BAMBINI and this perfectly expresses the objective of the project. Usually parents with small children prefer to use the car as their main mean of transport. Furthermore, when you look at children’s books or toys that deal with mobility, the themes are mostly related to some form of motorized traffic. Therefore, children become conditioned in favour of motorised vehicles from very early on.

The project BAMBINI aims to counteract this type of socialisation by using various innovative approaches. Creative and inspiring toys and books about sustainable transport modes for children aged 0 to 6 are designed and produced by the project partners. These toys and books are distributed to and tested within crĂšches, kindergartens and pre-schools in 11 different countries.
So far 3 out of a total of 6 BAMBINI toys are tested in the child care facilities. And in time for the Christmas season the BAMBINI partners even distributed a special book about a Christmas bike that was designed by children for children and is available for download on the project website in 11 European languages. But BAMBINI also aims to make parents recognize the importance of an early travel socialisation. This is done by organising BAMBINI workshops for staff of pre-birth classes, day care centres and kindergartens, to incite them to inform and stimulate parents to use sustainable transport modes more often. Professionals of day care centres and kindergartens are also called upon to develop and use more activities around sustainable mobility modes in their daily practice. For these activities the BAMBINI website also provides ample inspiration in the “Ideas Corner” on the website (www.mobile-bambini.eu). With the help of all those professionals and beautifully designed toys and books, more and more children will move smart from the start!

Family Cycling

Enjoying cycle activities in your family on Mothers Day (1st May) and on FamilyÂŽs day (15th May), learn how to ride a bike and test your skills or compete with others.
On Mother's day (1th of May) and on Family's day (15th of May), the LIFE CYCLE team, together with a group of students from the secondary school (last year before university), organized a set of actions in the main park of Aveiro to promote the use of the bike within the family or as a group.
One of the actions was directed to young children who could not even ride a bicycle. Learn how to ride was their Mother's Day gift. Those who could stand on the bike and reach a reasonable level of independence received a diploma of encouragement. To motivate them, older children showed them the possibilities and potential of cycling. This initiative seamed to have pleased and encouraged younger children to experience riding alone. Furthermore, games for families to compete and show their agility on the bike were organised. During the two days, 31 families played in the garden, three children learned how to ride a bike.

Get staff cycling to work

Bike to Work is a long running, trilingual web based motivational programme for employees and employers that is financially self-supporting.
Since www.biketowork.be went online in May 2009, it has been a growing success: about 15.000 cyclists have registered and 230 employers have enrolled to participate in the programme, the last two years. Registration is free for participants and provided their employer has also registered, they benefit from a unique system of bike points, which may be exchanged for various advantages. We also organise summer and winter competitions and we give practical tips. The central part of the website is the bike calendar where cyclists register their rides.

Tours in all Germany

Tours in all Germany LIFE CYCLE's concept of offering guided bicycle city tours for new residents is spreading all over Germany - to at least 50 cities in 2011.
The concept, developed and refined by the German Cyclists' Federation ADFC, shows to be successful even after LIFE CYCLE ends. Many local groups adopt the ideas to their circumstances, supported by the handbook developed during the project.
In about 50 German cities, more than 150 tours are being offered in the year 2011. You can find them in metropolitan Berlin as well as in rural towns, and the offers vary from tours led by the mayor, to historic church tours and beergarden tours, to bilingual German-English tours.
The idea of an easy, informative cycle tour seems to be still developing.

Cycling for Health

CTC, UK's National Cycling Organisation, has successfully introduced many Cycling for Health schemes over the last three years in England.
The Cycling for Health schemes are aimed at people over 50 years old and usually comprise of an introductory session for beginners or less confident cyclists which includes cycle training. Once all participants feel confident to take part in a short bike ride a CTC ride leader provides guided tours in the local area. The number of rides can vary but it's typically one ride per week over an 8-week period. Some of the participants are referred to the rides by their doctor to improve their health. Cycling for Health schemes have become more and more popular in the UK over the last 3 years.

Bike to Work, Spring 2011

Hungary's Bike to Work campaign, organized by the Hungarian Cyclists Club, is up and going again in 2011
The campaign period of Spring 2011 uses some quite impressing new tools to get new participants on their bikes. HCC launched the “Bike to Work!” Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/bringazzamunkaba) with an attractive application that will help us reach more participants and refill the campaign with new energy. The app shows the summed distance that the Bam! community has made on their bicycles and gives trophies to the participants. We also continue our “Bam! Ambassador” action: this year we are going to give the title to the most active Hungarian celebrity. We managed to involve some heavy media partners: one of the biggest Hungarian commercial televisions (TV2), the most read daily newspaper (NĂ©pszabadsĂĄg) and the most popular weekly economy magazine (HVG) will be our sponsors.

Keep on cycling to work

Although the campaign "Bike to work" finished at the end of 2010, workers start cycling again at the beginning of spring.
March and April are those months in Krakow when the new season of cycling starts. Day by day more cyclists arrive to work by bikes carrying new ideas. Although the campaign organized for encourage our colleagues to cycle to works finished last year they all keep staying in touch and share their ideas within social network. Joining Facebook recently has brought our action more stakeholders and potential multipliers. Despite some potential cyclists stay reserved about cycling and claim that they need more cycling infrastructure, the action keeps convincing them that cycling is easier. The action was accompanied by weekend trips that brought new participants to the main action.

Kindergarten Program

90 kindergartens in the city of Graz carry out the very successful kindergarten program "There is nothing like starting young" every year since 2008.
Since the school year 2008/09 more than 6000 children got in contact with the kindergarten program. It consists of: learning how to cycle playfully with the run bike (no pedals, no training wheels), picture cycling stories, the certificate „I can bike“ and motivating activities for parents. This program is easy to apply and has a very good cost benefit ratio. The approach to combine emotional elements (story telling) and training of skills (e.g. balance) proved to be successful. The children became proud of their way of moving and also influenced their parents to change their mobility behaviour especially for the trips to the kindergartens. The method can be easily transferred to other sites. The action is already part of the regular annual program for the kindergartens.

Seminars on cycling

Seminars on cycling Eight University classes were informed about cycling benefits in four seminars given by external experts. They were followed by cycling tours around the city.
The first seminar was delivered to two gerontology classes. Nearly 60 students were taught about the health benefits of practising an active life style and about the role of mobility as a key element for supporting healthy living. The first part was given by a Medical Doctor, dealing with the importance of physical activity to improve the quality of life. Afterwards, a Mobility Expert talked about sustainable mobility and active modes and their importance not only for personal health but also to achieve sustainable transport policies. The second and third seminars were delivered to nurses and primary school teacher classes. The fourth seminar was delivered to urban planning classes. Cycling was approached as a key element to be encouraged and promoted through the right policy decisions and though a new approach to urban design.

Safe cycling courses

Safe cycling courses The VCL bicycle safety courses offer theory for parents and practicing for children before making a guided tour in real traffic situations.
The bicycle stands for flexible, fast and healthy transport. Unfortunately it is only used for about 5% of the journeys in Liechtenstein. These courses help parents to discover the bicycle again as a means of transport and are a contribution for a safe and independent way to school for children. Participants learn to ride a bicycle reliably and self-confidently on the main streets; behave like vehicle drivers; safely master difficult situations (left turn, roundabouts). Each year the children of the primary schools of four of the eleven Liechtenstein towns are invited, together with a parent.

Cycling audits to school

Cycling audits to school As part of the curriculum of A-level students, 10 teams chose to have a case study related to LIFE CYCLE. "Cycling audits" of routes to school were performed.
As part of the curriculum of A-level students, 10 teams (44 students) chose to implement a case study related to LIFE CYCLE. Each group started with a research on the subject of cycling mobility in the first term. The second term was dedicated to conceive and carry out a “Cycling Audit” between different residential areas and the schools. Local entities (City Council, Police, traffic engineers, parents and teachers) joined the event. Based on the audits, all groups will elaborate a set of suggestions and recommendations to improve the routes to school by bike. Alternative routes can also be advised. In the third term the results will be presented in a formal presentation to the whole school with the goal to promote Cycling to School. The final reports of each group will be sent to the City Council. These students will also disseminate the campaign “Let’s bike to school” that will take place for the third year in a row, during the third term.

Pupils cycling for health

Combining benefits of cycling on health with workshops on diet and physical activity, an awareness raising campaign took place in two schools of Graz.
Within the action "Active, Mobile, Safe = Health", many different measures were tested on their potential to change attitude and mobility behaviour in the target group of pupils. Alongside with bicycle repair courses for children, the family bicycle training in real traffic proved to be most successful. In these training units parents were able to improve their own cycling behaviour and to learn the right teaching style for their children. This measure ensured a long time effect as the advantages of cycling were introduced to the whole family. The evaluation verified, that the family is the place where decisions about children's transport modes are made and therefore has to be included into successful implementations wherever possible. The action took place from June 2008 to June 2010.

More Benefits than Risks

Study asked "Do the health benefits of cycling outweigh the risks?". The health benefits of cycling were substantially larger than the risks.
This paper describes how the health benefits from the increased physical activity of a modal shift for urban commutes outweigh the health risks. They summarized the literature for air pollution, traffic accidents and physical activity using systematic reviews.
For those who shift from car to bike, beneficial effects of increased physical activity are larger (3-14 mos gained) than effects of extra air pollution (1-40 days lost) and traffic accidents (5-9 days lost).

Intervention study: cycling & air pollution

Numerous epidemiological studies have demonstrated adverse health effects of a sedentary life style, on the one hand, and of acute and chronic exposure to traffic-related air pollution, on the other.
Because physical exercise augments the amount of inhaled pollutants, it is not clear whether cycling to work in a polluted urban environment should be encouraged or not. To address this conundrum it has been investigated if a bicycle journey along a busy commuting road would induce changes in biomarkers of pulmonary and systematic inflammation in a group of healthy subjects.

Methods
38 volunteers (mean age: 43 ± 8.6 years, 26% women) cycled for about 20 minutes in real traffic near a major bypass road (road test; mean UFP exposure: 28,867 particles per cm3) in Antwerp and in a laboratory with filtered air (clean room; mean UFP exposure: 496 particles per cm3). The exercise intensity (heart rate) and duration of cycling were similar for each volunteer in both experiments. Exhaled nitric oxide (NO), plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6), platelet function, Clara cell protein in serum and blood cell counts were measured before and 30 minutes after exercise.

Results
Percentage of blood neutrophils increased significantly more (p = 0.004) after exercise in the road test (3.9%; 95% CI: 1.5 to 6.2%; p = 0.003) than after exercise in the clean room (0.2%; 95% CI: -1.8 to 2.2%, p = 0.83). The pre/post-cycling changes in exhaled NO, plasma IL-6, platelet function, serum levels of Clara cell protein and number of total blood leukocytes did not differ significantly between the two scenarios.

Conclusions
Traffic-related exposure to particles during exercise caused a small increase in the distribution of inflammatory blood cells in healthy subjects. The health significance of this isolated change is unclear.

Cycling beats colds

A study by researchers in the US claims that regular riding a bike in the cold reduces the changes of getting colds and flu and alleviates symptoms.
On the same day that the mainstream press reports that scientists in Cambridge may be close to discovering a cure for the common cold, a study by researchers at a university in the United States suggests that daily exercise such as cycling can go a long way towards preventing the ailment being caught in the first place.
The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, has been carried out by academics at the Appalachian State University (ASU) in North Carolina, adds that regular exercise can also reduce the severity of symptoms if you do catch a cold.

Juveniles & Safe Cycling

Juveniles & Safe Cycling The aim of the VCL bicycle safety course at secondary schools: raising the awareness of the juveniles for safe cycling and their behavior in traffic.
Some juveniles have never learned the good practice of safe cycling. Others tend to ride the bicycle in a quite aggressive, ruthless manner. Both types of cyclists endanger themselves. Participants of the VCL cycling courses receive first an interactive lesson on safe cycling. Then they learn in real traffic to ride a bicycle reliably and self-confidently on busy streets; behave like vehicle drivers; safely master difficult situations (left turn, roundabouts). In 2010 courses were given for the first level (about 33 students each) of the secondary schools at Balzers and at Schaan.

Royal Mail Cycle Delivery

Royal Mail plans to replace its bikes with electric trolleys, claiming that posties on bikes violate health and safety regulations.
Royal Mail plans to replace almost all of its bikes with electric trolleys that will be shipped out to neighbourhoods by van. Royal Mail's chief executive argues that posties on bikes violate health and safety regulations. CTC says his comment that the increasing weights of postal deliveries necessitates new delivery technologies ignores the potential to use cargo bicycles and tricycles, already used in other European countries and by courier companies in Britain. CTC would like to see these cargo bikes and tricycles used to deliver larger weights of post rather than by van.

New residents' tours

New residents' tours How do you successfully plan and implement bicycle tours for new residents? 19 activists from all over Germany met to share their experiences
Some of them have already been doing these tours, others would like to introduce them in their local tour programme. The meeting in DĂŒsseldorf on October 21st started with a small guided bicycle tour, thus giving the participants a direct experience of the important features in planning a new residents' tour.
Most of the tours attract not only new residents, but tourists, people restarting to cycle, or simply longtime residents interested in seeing their city from another perspective. The combination of a low-level cycling tour with information and communication seems to be attractive.

Oliveirinha school

In eight schools of the Municipality of Aveiro, a campaign and a set of activities related to cycling were launched to motivate the children to ride a bike to school.
A class of the 8th grade (13th years old) of Oliveirinha School accepted the challenge of planning and promoting the “lets bike to school” campaign within their school as part of their school project.
For a start, the twenty four students of that class made presentations of the “life cycle” project (its goals and objectives) for the whole school, in every classroom.
On top of this, the students of that class prepared a simple questionnaires to get to know the bike related activities that students would like to develop during this school year .
Currently the class is analyzing the results of the survey.

Climate change and health

Health must be at the centre of our fight against climate change says the UK Health Secretary which is highlighted in a new report with key findings.
The report calls on health ministers and professionals across the world to recognise the danger that climate change poses to health, in the run up to the UN conference in Copenhagen in December. One of the key findings in the report shows that changes towards a low carbon transport system could reduce the health impacts of urban air pollution and physical inactivity. The Health Secretary makes the case for policies that improve health as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to help ‘tip the balance in favour of ambitious climate change action’.

Cycling in Fall is fine!

Cycling in Fall is fine! The participants of the Fall leg of the Cycling to work campaign broke the belief that only Spring and Summer is cycling season.
More than 11K people performed the minimum 7 occasions to bike to work in the 4 weeks of the Fall turn of the Cycle to work campaign in Hungary. With this number we outdid not just the achievements in spring but our expectations as well. Despite the Fall weather the participants steadfastly biked to work, and of course, there were even more people who biked but did it less than 7 times. We organized 6 events and had 3 subcampaigns popularizing biking in skirts/suits, combined transport with trains, and involving university students as well. The next step is an interim winter leg in January.

Right to ride to school

Another school in the UK has banned its pupils from cycling to school because of safety fears so CTC launched a Right to Ride to School Campaign.
A College in Wednesbury has banned its pupils from cycling to school because of health and safety fears. The headteacher says they are concerned that pupils will be knocked down on the busy road outside the school. Children are not allowed to bring bikes onto the site and two pupils who parked their bikes outside have had them stolen. Schools can only prevent pupils from leaving a bike on the school premises. In response to these concerns, CTC has released a campaigning kit for families who want their children to be able to cycle to school despite opposition from head teachers.

The local ADFC group in Leipzig offers four guided tours for new residents this year. The first of these tours started on a bright sunny evening on April 21st. It showed the participants the best connections for cyclists in Leipzig's town centre. Often the smartest route for cycling is not simply the shortest one, small detours may lead you to roads with less traffic, better surface or through a green park. Not all of the participants were new to Leipzig, anyway they had learned a lot while enjoying a sportive evening activity.

The main goal was to raise the children's interest in the health, environment and transportation benefits of cycling and to test their biking skills at the same time, while they had fun. 500 children attended these classes, prepared especially for the LifeCycle project. The work with the school was highly rewarding, given that the group of teachers involved was very open for the issues and shared the objectives of LifeCycle due to the fact that this school is part of another European project promoting cycling in schools: Programme Comenius "On the way to Cy.R.On.Med".

Bike to Work in Belgium

The very first campaign in Belgium has started. A warm up for the September team event. But
it will continue. Bike to Work Belgium all year round!
In Belgium the first Bike to Work-project started end of April. It's only a warming up for the team event during September. But in Belgium it's not a one-month-campaign. Bike to Work will run all year round! The principle is simple: cycling employees mark their rides-on-bike online. They get one point for each cycling-day (also possible in combination with train/bus/carpooling). And points can be changed for prizes, promotions, gadgets... But their company/organisation should also subscribe & contribute. First 800 biking workers are registrated. Go and take a look: www.biketowork.be

Hungary cycled to work!

Hungary cycled to work! The whole country talked about cycling, 22,000 people participated during the Hungarian Cycle to Work campaign organized by Hungarian Cyclists' Club.
In LifeCycle project, Hungarian Cyclists' Club organized Cycle to Work campaign in spring 2009. The aim of the campaign was to show people who natural it is to cycle. Success: a lot of people got the message. The campaign and the "Cycle-contests" among companies, the website (www.bringazzmunkaba.hu) itself, number of newspaper articles and TV appearances generated a lot of talk about cycling: many people considered cycling as an ordinary way to get to work. "A colleague of mine arrived by bike to today - I would have never dreamt he would use a bike" - as one participant formulated. In two weeks time we are going to report about the numbers, e.g. the 22,000 people who registered on the website.

Cycling in Braunschweig

New residents' tour shows Braunschweig from a cyclist's perspective
On May 10th, some 30 people participated in a cycle tour specially designed for cycling newcomers. Five ADFC volunteers who organized and led the tour showed them the best cycle connections and 10 points of interest throughout the town. Although most of the people had already been living in Braunschweig for years, the concept of the tour nevertheless seemed to fit for them, too: 4 hours and many impressions and discussions later, all participants were content and happy.
Informations about the new residents' tours are being announced to every new citizen by the municipality.

Bicycle Safety Course

The aim of the VCL bicycle safety course is that parents set good traffic examples and that they do not demand too much of their children.
What seems easy cycling for parents can be a great challenge for children because of the high coordinative requirements. The courses help parents to discover the bicycle again as a means of transport and are a contribution for a safe and independent way to school for children. Participants learn to ride a bicycle reliably and self-confidently on the main streets; behave like vehicle drivers; safely master difficult situations (left turn, roundabouts). In 2009 courses are given in Eschen, Schellenberg and Vaduz. All children of the primary schools are invited, together with a parent.
